BY SUZANNE LAFLEUR

The story starts off in the main character, Aubrey’s, house in Virginia. It is set about three months after Aubrey and her family are involved in a car accident. Aubrey is now all alone. Her father and her sister both died in the car accident and her mother left. She has to try to survive on her own. But then her grandmother comes and stays for a while, they begin to search for her mother.

AUBREY: Aubrey is the main character in this book. Aubrey is an 11 year old girl who lives in Virginia. Aubrey was involved in a car accident three months prior to when the story is set. In the car accident Aubrey’s father and her sister, Savannah, were killed. Aubrey’s mother hadn’t coped well with the situation and had left. Aubrey was left in the house to fend for herself. She lasted a couple of weeks before her grandma came to visit. Her grandma or gram as she is called came to visit Aubrey and her mother. But her mother wasn’t there. After spending a couple of weeks looking for her mother, Aubrey ended up leaving her house and moving to Vermont with her grandmother. Aubrey struggles to adapt in Vermont, but she learns to cope and even makes a friend along the way.
GRAM: Gram is Aubrey’s grandmother. She goes to visit Aubrey and when she finds that her mother had left, she conducts a search for her. Gram then takes Aubrey back to her house in Vermont. Gram continues to search for Aubrey’s mother throughout the story. She tries to keep Aubrey safe from getting hurt by what’s happened.
The story is told from Aubrey’s point of view, it starts off with Gram coming to visit Aubrey and her mother. Then Gram finds out that Aubrey’s mother left, and then taking Aubrey back to Vermont to live with her.
The most important part of the story is when Aubrey tries to runaway to Colorado to find her mother. She attempts to steal a bike from her school. But Bridget told gram what Aubrey’s was planning to do. So they caught up with her in the end and convinced her no to go.
The most important relationships in the book are the ones between Aubrey and Gram and Aubrey and her mother. Aubrey is initially upset with Gram because she made her move to Vermont. Throughout most of the story Aubrey is angry and upset with her mother for leaving her on her own.

The book made me think about how quickly someone’s life can change. One minute you’re driving in the car with your family and the next, you are lying in a hospital bed.
I really enjoyed the novel; it made me cry at some parts in the story. I would describe it as a book about overcoming grief and moving on. The most interesting parts in the story are when we find out, what happened in the accident. We get told snippets about what happened. But we soon find out the whole story.
